The Sydney Lithuanian choir was founded in June, 1954, by the then Committee of the Sydney Lithuanian Community, with 44 choristers joining up. The first choir members in the main were mature age family people, who had sung in various choirs in Lithuania and Germany. The choir membership grew and many younger people also joined up. On May 5, 1956, the choir was formally "christened" and was given the name "Daina" (which means "a song" in Lithuanian).

In addition to regular performances on various festive occasions, there has always been an annual choir concert. The choir has sung on TV, to military units, to Australian high schools and in multicultural concerts. Every year it sings at the Baltic June Deportations Commemoration to an audience of Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians and noted Australian political leaders.
